from Post SecretSadly J.D. Salinger died in his home at the age of 91 yesterday. Hard to imagine where American
literature would be without Holden Caulfield. Link here for more of the story and a brief video.

This Saturday Nalini Nadkarni will be attending the Saturday Morning Science event and we will be there with her book Between Earth and Sky, Our Intimate Connections to Trees.

Still hankering for something to read this summer? Never really sure what the buzz was about the National Book Award? The Red Leather Diary is a work of non-fiction written when a NY Times journalist discovers a discarded old diary, and embarks on a journey with the woman Florence Wolfson. A stunning picture of the 1930's New York.
The Blue Notebook is a work of fiction written by James Levine. It is the story of Batuk, an Indian girl who is taken to Mumbai from the countryside and sold into prostitution by her father; the blue notebook is her diary, in which she recalls her early childhood, records her life on the Common Street. I have not read this yet, but ordered some copies in for the store as it just released this July.
Who knows, maybe blogs will be this little picture of our culture and lives, though I am not sure if they look quite as cool as a neat old red or blue journal tucked away or left behind that we discover years later. If you are a bit nostalgic like me, you might just pick up a journal to start. i recommend the book Note to Self by O'Shea Samara if you embark on that journey!
And just for all of us Potterheads I added the countdown clock for the movie that comes out next week!
Looking for something to read this summer on the beach? Here are a couple suggestions that folks in Columbia might be reading. Columbia began the One Read Community Reading program 8 years ago and the public votes on a book for the community to read together and then there are a variety of programs throughout town in the fall. This year the book that was choosen by the public is The Air We Breathe by Andrea Barrett. Set in a sanatorium in the fall of 1916, the novel takes a look at the patient's lives.

In case you up for more another quiz- click here to test your knowledge of Women's History. Resolutions have passed each year since 1987 proclaiming March to be National Women's History month. Yesterday we had our first author event in the new space and had a great crowd for Animal Rights activist and author Karen Dawn. Thanks to everyone who came, thanks to Karen for coming to the store and writing "Thanking the Monkey"- hearing her stories was eye opening indeed as we think about animal rights.
Hallmark holiday or not, I actually don't mind Valentines Day! As there are many people scrambling to get the roses, some yummy chocolate, little red teddy bear- how about some calorie free books! I am secretly hoping that someone will open a Cupcake Cafe here in town, but until then I get to browse at the gorgeous cupcake cookbooks that are available now.
